2016 Taipei Arts Festival: 4x4: Ephemeral Architectures by Gandini Juggling

Tracing pathways in space, four jugglers and four ballet dancers share a stage for the first time.

Both these formalised systems are ephemeral journeys through time and space, leaving an unseen trace, like an imaginary architecture. 4 x 4 is a celebration of where these paths meet.

This seasons sees the sensational Gandini Juggling returning to its love affair with pure patterns and mathematics with 4x4. Following the international success of Smashed, this new work takes us on fleeting journeys through time and space in a unique dialogue between jugglers and ballet dancers.

4x4: Ephemeral Architects premiered at the 2015 London International Mime Festival at the Royal Opera House, where it received rave reviews.

Directed by world renowned juggler Sean Gandini, choreographed by Royal Ballet dancer Ludovic Ondiviela, with original composition 'Suspended opus 69' by Nimrod Borenstein and performed live by exceptional young chamber ensemble Camerata Alma Viva. Incredible lighting design by Guy Hoars completes this sensational cross-art form experience.

Social Juggling Workshop

In this Social Juggling workshop, world-renowned jugglers Sean Gandini and Kati Ylä-Hokkala will teach multi-handed juggling, group juggling, timing and passing. Exploring their substantial performance catalogue beyond '4 x 4 Ephemeral Architectures', the piece featured at Taipei Arts Festival, Sean and Kati will teach how they work to reinvigorate juggling and movement experiences whether at conventional theatre spaces, opera houses, water fountains, art galleries or school playgrounds.

Sean Gandini/ Artistic Director of the Gandini Juggling

  • As a child growing up in Havana, Sean was fascinated by Magic and Mathematics. In the 1980s, he was a regular performer in London's Covent Garden and toured with various theatre groups. Since then, Sean has spent the last 25 years researching and contributing to all aspects of juggling; he is a prolific creator and his work also extends to choreography and directing. With Gandini Juggling, Sean has performed in over 2,500 shows from art galleries to palaces; street corners to stadiums. He also regularly teaches in many of the world's leading Circus Schools. In 2016 he worked as juggling choreographer on Philip Glass opera Akhnaten, for the English National Opera.

Kati Ylä-Hokkala/ Artistic Director of the Gandini Juggling

  • Kati is one of her generation's iconic jugglers. Renowned as one of the leading innovators in dance/juggling, her ability to combine movement and extremely complex coordination is second to none.
