The 2021 Taiwan European Film Festival (TEFF) takes place between 10 December to 19 December 2021 on the streaming platform 'Joint Movies' with free entrance, This year, three short films, commissioned by the British Council, together with BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival and BFI NETWORK, are cross-cultural collaborations between UK filmmakers and Syrian, Palestinian and South African creatives, and showcase a breadth of distinctive filmmaking voices. They explore diverse themes including sexuality and conflict; intergenerational gay culture; and migration and family ties.

The Men Who Speak Gayle

Young drag performer Nathan is one of the last people to speak Gayle - a secret language the gay community was forced to invent during Apartheid. He finds out about Louis, an original Gayle speaker living in a conservative desert town in South Africa and wants to put on a performance with him. However, these men, two generations apart and from different cultural and racial backgrounds, have never met - and have no idea how the town will react.

About Taiwan European Film Festival

TEFF (Taiwan European Film Festival) is organized by European Economic and Trade Office since 2005. TEFF presents a selection of European films every year aiming to show the diversity of cultures, arts and languages of the European countries. The 17th TEFF will take place from 10 December to 19 December 2021 on the streaming platform “Joint Movies” with free entrance, Chinese and English subtitles available.

How to view movies:

  • Please register at the 2021 TEFF registration page on BeClass for free. The registration will be verified by your phone number. Each person can select three movies. Each movie is limited to 100 registrations.
  • You need to register before 11:59 pm, 12 December. 
  • You will receive a redeem code for the movie via mobile text message, and you need to redeem it within the next 72 hours. You are able to redeem the code from 12AM, 12 December to 11:59 PM 16 December. 
  • Movie streaming is hosted on 'Joint Movies'.
